Torrente Carapelle, where the Gatta-Cefala is at home

      Gatta Cefala

The Carapelle river, often classified as a torrent, rises in Irpinia at the foot of Mount La Forma (864 m) with the name of Calaggio torrent. It flows for about 98 km in the Tavoliere delle Puglie before flowing into the Gulf of Manfredonia in the locality of Torre Rivoli, near Zapponeta.

The main tributaries of the Carapelle are the Frugno and Carapellotto streams. Its lower course is affected as a protected area within the Salina di Margherita di Savoia nature reserve.

The otter, also called the cephalic cat, or water dog, is an animal that lives in the Carapelle stream. There are many stories among the old fishermen and hunters of the waterways of Foggia. The mustelid, in the Carapelle river, for some years, is considered to be increasing in number.
