      Supersano, the more than healthy city

      The toponym derives from the Latin super sanum (more than healthy) and indicates the salubrity of the climate and air due to the uncontaminated lands on which the vast Bosco Belvedere extended. A slightly hilly place.

      The first news of the present inhabited nucleus dates back to 1195 when the fief of Supersano was part of the Principality of Taranto. In 1240 Frederick II passed the fief to his son Manfredi Lancia, who was defeated and killed by Charles I of Anjou in the Battle of Benevento in 1266. With the Angevin conquest of the Kingdom of Sicily, in 1272 Supersano passed to Filippo Montefuscoli, then was incorporated again into the Principality of Taranto, and finally was ceded to the del Balzo family who governed it until 1507.

      In 1480 it suffered the devastation of the Turks and the hamlet was destroyed and the population decimated. The fiefdom remained in the Royal Court until 1538, the year in which it was sold to Alfonso Branai Castriota (son of Bernardo and nephew of Vrana Konti) who purchased it on behalf of his nephew Pirro. Subsequently, Supersano was under the rule of the D’Aragona, the Carafa and, from 1765, the Gallone di Tricase who were the last feudal lords.
