L’arco lucchetti di Corigliano d’Otranto

represents one of the most mysterious civil architectures of Puglia. It is located in the historic center of the town of Grecìa Salentina, near Piazza San Nicola. A date refers to 1497. And immediately comes to attention that pair of lovers holding a large eight-pointed star, to represent their good fortune, while next to them is a dog with a wedding ring in its mouth, a metaphor for the fidelity and complicity of marriage. The star contains some zoomorphic elements inspired by the fables of Aesop and Phaedrus on the moral precepts to follow for a happy life.

On the right column a monstrous figure appears, perhaps marine, while on the left acanthus leaves and various jewels can be seen. On the architrave an inscription appears HODE DELAUDU DONA GRACIA IN CASA DECOLA ROBI (Oh God from above give thanks in the house of Cola Robi), followed by a winged figure armed with a sword and a series of angels carrying people inside sheets.

The great star does not dispel all the shadows, evil creeps in in the guise of a dragon, held on a leash however by a crowned figure, it is Saint Michael, riding his horse, aided by the invocations of two praying figures.

Moving to the right, the birds conquer the scene: two that intertwine their long necks, others perched on the branches of a plant that originates from a jug, others that quench their thirst from the same amphora and again a hen, with a ring in her mouth. The symbolism is different, the message remains the same: man and woman are called to build their own life, together, to support its weight, together, and base it on some precepts that are not debatable but, always, under the light of a lucky star.
