      The San Giovanni Rotondo Massacre

      On October 14, 1920, San Giovanni Rotondo was the scene of a serious bloodbath. It was the day of the installation in the town hall of the socialists who had won (1069 votes against 850) against a popular clerical-fascist coalition, called Arditi di Cristo. For fear of riots, 40 carabinieri and 82 soldiers converged on the town. The spark was lit by the attempt to display a red flag from the balcony of the town hall that saw fascists and populars clash. Insults quickly turned into brawls. After the killing of a carabiniere, the order was given to shoot the demonstrators. The final toll was 14 dead and 85 wounded: the most violent massacre of the red two years in Italy, a dramatic event that gave strength to squadrism and political reprisals in Puglia.

      From these facts Antonio Tedesco, for the Nenni Foundation, drew the book Fermate i socialisti, published by Edizioni Arcadia in 2020.
