Sammichele di Bari, il borgo dei vignali...

A small town nestled in the Murgia Barese with just over 6000 inhabitants and about 6000 years of history. We are talking about Sammichele di Bari, inhabited since the Neolithic and later by settlements of Iapyges and Peuceti.

The presence in Sammichele of two menhirs, one about two meters high, the other just over a meter, located along the old road to Taranto, testifies to the ancient history of the center of Bari.

Among the most interesting religious buildings is the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, in typical Renaissance style.

In 1766, at the behest of the archpriest Vito Matteo Marinelli, the baroque spire of the bell tower was raised. The paintings of the church are divided between the main altarpiece and the paintings that cover the walls and the vault of the apse; the pictorial complex celebrates the cycle of the life of the Virgin.

In the historic center, instead, among a maze of narrow streets that reveal the ancient custom of the “vignali” (that is, houses with a pergola covered in vines) a sixteenth-century manor stands out in the distance, proving the Renaissance nature of the center. The facade of the castle is covered in ashlars, with neo-Gothic mullioned windows on the main floor.

Inside the Caracciolo Castle is the “Dino Bianco” Museum of Peasant Civilization, which houses the collection donated by Professor Vito Donato Bianco in 1968.
