The living nativity scene of Tricase is a unique nativity scene. It is a permanent structure that covers the surface of an entire hill, we are in the Salento greenhouses, and specifically on Monte Orco.
La tradizione della Natività è ambientata sullo sfondo degli antichi mestieri popolari e delle tradizioni culinarie e folkloristiche del Capo di Leuca, dando modo ai visitatori di conoscere da vicino il lavoro e i gesti delle antiche arti, in un percorso di circa 2 chilometri da vivere in un tempo lento, sospeso a mezz’aria tra luccicanti luminarie e scoppiettanti focolari.
In the Living Nativity Scene of Tricase you can admire extraordinary local arts such as that of the pelacane (leather tanner, a profession linked to the majestic Vallonea Oak of Tricase), the funaro (the maker of work ropes), the weaver, the stonemason and the papier-mâché maker, the nachiro (the person who runs the mill) and the housewife. And while you make “friends” with these ancient figures, you can taste local specialties such as pittule and local wine.
Through the trades and reenactments of around 200 people all in costume who work as artisans, commoners and farmers, we witness a suggestive representation of the nativity contextualised in Salento.
The event has always focused the interest and participation of schools of all levels, as well as of the various associations present in the area.
Every year it opens its doors to visitors on 25, 26, 28, 30 December and 1, 3, 5, 6 January.
It is impossible not to find the road, from afar, the hill of Monte Orco is noted for its lights and for an immense comet that corresponds to the cave of the Nativity.
