Porto Cesareo, between rabbits, Roman columns and baboons

      porto cesareo4 scaled 1 scaled

Porto Cesareo is a tourist resort in Salento with about 6 thousand inhabitants.

It is an urban nucleus of very ancient origin. Already known in pre-Roman times with the name derived from the inhabitants of the island of Saseno near Valona, in Albania, to whom its foundation is most likely due.

Some important archaeological finds testify that the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In the archaeological site Scalo di Furno, a sacellum and a sacred fenced area were discovered, perhaps dedicated to the Messapian cult of the goddess Thana, known to the Romans as Lucina, goddess of childbirth.

The site is located north of Porto Cesareo, 3.7 km away and overlooks the sea opposite the now famous heart-shaped islet.

In the MArTA, the National Museum of Magna Graecia in Taranto, there is a very precious Egyptian statue dating back to the 4th century BC depicting, in the form of a baboon (an animal associated with him together with the sacred ibis), Thot, the Egyptian god of writing and protector of scribes, found way back in 1932 by a group of fishermen in the sea of Porto Cesareo.

Its surface, in fact, reaches 2.5 km in length and 400 m in extension.

Porto Cesareo and its protected marine area, lends itself easily to snorkeling activities for the variety of animal and plant species in its seabed. It could also be reached by swimming but there is the possibility of renting a boat on site or being accompanied by a taxi boat.

It was the inhabitants of the hinterland who renamed it Rabbit Island when, in the dark period between the two wars, they sought sustenance through a breeding project that soon saw the entire area literally colonized by these friendly little animals.

Like Porto Cesareo and the surrounding areas, the island has also been the scene of important archaeological finds including a Phoenician ring that over time has inspired stories and legends of a thousand shades.
