      garfanu scaled

The Gargano National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Italy, with a surface area of 118,144 hectares. The park includes the four Tremiti Islands and the Umbra Forest.

The Gargano is mainly made up of sedimentary rocks dating back to the Jurassic, mostly stratified and affected by the phenomenon of karst dissolution. The exception is Punta Pietre Nere, a mass of dark volcanic rocks dating back to the Triassic, emerging on the beach of Lesina.

The Park includes two lagoons (Lake Lesina and Lake Varano) located in the north-western part and a small lake in the southern sector (Lake Salso).

]In the Gargano National Park, various habitats can be found: beech forests in the interior and on the northern slope, Aleppo pine forests along the coast, large expanses of Mediterranean scrub, not to mention the oak forests where Turkey oaks and holm oaks abound, the mixed woods rich in flowering ash, ash, elm, holly, chestnut, maples, oaks and beech.

The Gargano promontory, geographically separated from the Apennines and stretching towards Eastern Europe, represents a biodiversity hot spot due to the presence of wild orchids, of which over 80 different species belonging to 17 genera have been recorded, some of which are endemic to the Gargano such as Ophrys promontorii and Ophrys sipontensis.
