The Regional Natural Park of the Ofanto River falls close to the Alta Murgia Natural Park. Its vegetation is composed of woods where there are oaks, ash trees, poplars, willows and elms, as well as thick reeds and typically marsh vegetation. Near the mouth, around Barletta, thanks to the high salinity and stagnation of the waters, Mediterranean salt steppes have settled, considered to be of high conservation priority.

Numerous species of birds nest along the riverbed: the magpie, the goldfinch, the coot, the moorhen.

The Ofanto river has always played an important role in the territory, many events have taken place on its territory. Its name in the past was Aufidus, and it is mentioned by Horace and Virgil

The second Punic war takes place between two banks of the old Aufidus. Even today, near Canosa, you can admire a beautiful Roman bridge.
