The time machine stops first at Canne della Battaglia, where the Carthaginians, led by Hannibal, defeated the Romans. Don’t miss the Antiquarium, a museum that houses archaeological finds documenting the long life of Canne from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.
The journey continues north towards Canosa. It will be like walking through history when you find yourself in front of the Byzantine Cathedral of San Sabino, in the heart of the town. From here, prepare to go underground to visit the precious hypogea, including the Lagrasta, the largest in Southern Italy, the Hoplite, the Cerberus and the ancient burial tombs. Back on the surface, cross the Roman bridge to reach the amphitheater, the Barbarossa Mausoleum, the Bagnoli Mausoleum and some monuments along the Via Traiana, including the Torre Casieri and the Arch of Terenzio Varrone.
Finally, head inland: your destination will be Minervino Murge. Enjoy the view from this natural balcony over the Ofanto valley. Venture into the labyrinth of tangled streets and tuff arches and look for Piazza Bovio, where the Renaissance profile of the Cathedral of the Assumption stands out, with the Bishop's Palace and the bell tower. Take the opportunity for a refreshment break: it is worth tasting the many dishes based on cardoncello mushrooms, the gastronomic symbol of the city.
