The official name, still reported on nautical charts, is Isola Grande, given the larger size of the island compared to the others that make up the small archipelago. Its surface, in fact, reaches 2.5 km in length and 400 meters in extension.
It was the inhabitants of the hinterland who renamed it Rabbit Island when, in the dark period between the two wars, they sought sustenance through a breeding project that soon saw the entire area literally colonized by these friendly little animals.
L'isola dei Conigli is easily suitable for snorkeling due to the variety of animal and plant species on its seabed.
It can also be reached by swimming but there is the possibility of renting a boat on site or being accompanied by a taxi boat.
Like Porto Cesareo and the surrounding areas, the island has also been the scene of important archaeological finds including a Phoenician ring that over time has inspired stories and legends of a thousand shades.
In addition to the rabbits, which can still be seen running around the island, you can enjoy the rich vegetation, characterized primarily by the typical Mediterranean scrub, a pine forest of Aleppo pines and cypresses. This is due to the fact that in the 1950s the Forestry Corps carried out a reforestation project to safeguard the quality of the land and guarantee the typical biodiversity of the Mediterranean areas.
Furthermore, l'Isola dei Conigli is part of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area.
