      Laterza, Renaissance and Apulian Majolica

      laterzaxx 1 scaled

Laterza is known for its bread, for its deep ravine and for its majolica, characterised by a particular chromatic application, predominantly turquoise on white glaze.

It is located in a strategic position, on the western edge of the ravine of the same name, which represents a suggestive canyon of karst origin.

The historic center of Laterza, close to the ravine, is rich in Apulian Renaissance and architectural enchantment. You can admire an arch that the locals have preserved over the centuries, integrating it into the urban furniture.

The intricate maze of streets in the historic center leads through a gentle slope to the mother church. A true Renaissance architectural jewel.

The church is the first example of Dalmatian architecture mixed with Apulian Romanesque in Puglia, and its facade, perpetually kissed by the sun, overlooks the ravine, almost as if it were a welcome poster for those looking at the town from the other side of the canyon. Built in 1408, it has “sisters” in other municipalities of Puglia, which resemble it for common shapes and architecture, such as Mottola, Manduria and Ostuni. Characteristic is the rose window, splendid and imposing, adorned with columns and arches.

The interior, divided into three naves, houses important frescoes and paintings.

Inside the marquise palace we find a well-organized and rich museum. It is the MUMA, or the museum of majolica.

Through a steep street you reach a Renaissance fountain. It is a social space still free and usable, adorned with several masks.
