      The beach of Torre dell'Orso

      1665850988433

A stone’s throw from Melendugno, on the coastal road that leads from San Foca to Otranto, is the beautiful and colorful beach of Torre dell’Orso. The name is due to the coastal tower that stands high and imposes its presence at times threatening and at times comforting. Torre dell’Orso is a marina in Melendugno and offers refined catering and entertainment services.

Its beach is one of the most enchanting places in Puglia. The crystalline waters and golden sand frame a place inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the ancient caves present here and very well preserved.

A small stream flows into the sea and refreshes the first waters that bathe the beach, a privileged place for the purity of its waters, confirmed year after year as a Blue Flag.

But the biggest surprise is the two stacks, almost attached to each other, that rise a few meters from the shoreline. They call them “The Two Sisters”. There is a story about them. It seems that two local peasants, one day many years ago, approached the sea to cool off. When they reached the bay of Torre dell’Orso, one of the two entered the water to bathe, but the water, near the rocks, was treacherous and swirling. The girl floundered and screamed for help, her sister could only jump to help her. They swam and swam, towards each other, and the more they swam the more their efforts seemed in vain. When they finally managed to get close to each other, they were exhausted, without strength. They hugged each other for the last time, now unable to overcome the fury of the sea, which swallowed them up. However, the god of the sea was sorry, he had compassion for the two innocent sisters, one dead from recklessness and the other from brotherly love. So he transformed them into two stacks, close and united for eternity.

The story has a macabre tinge like many popular legends, but the sight of these natural wonders, however, is real and within reach of a dive.
