Il presepe vivente di Strudà (Vernole)

In the Strudà quarry, among the caves and ravines dug into the tuff, the traditional living nativity scene is renewed again this year.

This is a very evocative location that recalls that of Greccio, the Lazio municipality where Francis set the Christian mystery of the birth of Jesus.

The route winds through dry stone walls and pajare and includes a small lake, some Israelite-style buildings and columns that should represent a temple under construction. Perhaps even in the times of the Roman Empire, money ran out and the works remained unfinished.

The route is animated by dozens of artisans and in the center there is a space for refreshments with pittule and fresh cheeses.

In a narrow but well-lit pajara, a carpenter carves dolls that leave everyone speechless.

Every year a new mother plays the role of Mary. Among the many figures charged with representing women and men of old Bethlehem, the only one who does not play any role in looking at her son with love and wonder, is the young girl who plays the Mother of all mothers.
