The sand nativity scene of Scorrano

      presepe sabbia6

In the enchanting Augustinian monastery of Scorrano, the most important sand nativity scene in Southern Italy is renewed again this year.

A tradition well known in Europe, and in Italy witnessed by the nativity scenes on the beaches of Rimini and Jesolo and in the historic centers of Salerno and Catanzaro.

Every year the most important sculptors in the world come to Scorrano, creating, in long months of preparation, real works of art, over 10 meters high and arranged in the cloister of the old religious building.

This year's theme is reserved for the events that are shaking Europe. The war is represented through the embrace of the Madonna to the baby Jesus. For centuries this embrace has told of women all over the world in the act of protecting and defending Life from the presence of evil and death.

Each artist develops a theme and elaborates it according to his own sensitivity.

The route ends in a second building allowing a pleasant walk through the historic center of the Salento village. The final work of this 2022 edition is a sculpture of the Pope who more than any other has committed himself to defending and safeguarding peace in the world.

The opening hours for visiting the nativity scene are from Monday to Friday from 16:00 to 21:00. Saturday from 16:00 to 22:00.

On Sundays and public holidays, however, there is a double opening shift: from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 15.30 to 22.00.

The cost of the ticket is 3 euros.
