      The Poplar in Puglia

      populus tremula

The poplar (Populus Linnaeus) is part of the Salicaceae family, and includes about 30 species. The poplar, like the ash, is a fast-growing tree. The trunk easily exceeds 30 meters. The color of the trunk varies from white to dark gray, depending on the species. The plants can be male, with narrower crowns and smaller flowers, or female, with wider and thicker crowns and larger flowers. In Italy the best-known species is the Populus Nigra, which has a knotty and very dark trunk. Next is the white poplar (Populus Alba), so called because of a thick whitish down present on the underside of the leaves. The Populus Tremula, which has a tall and slender trunk and a crown that is particularly mobile in the wind, hence the name tremula. The poplar does not have particular needs, it adapts well to different climates, but prefers a soil rich in organic substances and clayey.

In some cities, including Taranto, the CNR is experimenting with a natural strategy to combat heavy metal contamination. In fact, in specific areas, several micro-forests of poplars are being planted.
