      The prickly pear in Puglia

      fico scaled 1 scaled

The prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is part of the Cactaceae family. It is native to Mexico where it is also represented in the national flag. The name prickly pear was probably given by Christopher Columbus when he believed he had landed in India. This plant is very common in Puglia, and is very easy to grow, since, like all succulents, it does not require special attention. It tolerates drought well, but fears cold temperatures. The fruits can be eaten both fresh and transformed into jams, jellies, juices or liqueurs. They are rich in sugars, vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus. It is a laxative and helps intestinal peristalsis, keeping cholesterol levels under control.

Even the cosmetics industry is interested in using prickly pear in the production of creams, soaps, lotions and much more due to its astringent properties.
