      The Cemetery of Brindisi

      2 1

On September 27, 1915, at 8:10 in the morning, a roar tore through the air of the port of Brindisi: the Santabarbara of the battleship Benedetto Brin, anchored in the outer harbor, in front of the Guacina coast, exploded. The ship – 138 meters long and 23 meters wide, with a displacement of 14,000 tons – caught fire and sank, taking with it to the bottom of the sea 456 sailors, half of the entire crew of 943 men.

Immediately after the explosion, the military authorities advanced the hypothesis of an attack by Austrian war enemies, but little by little the more likely possibility of spontaneous combustion in the large hold used as an ammunition depot also began to take shape: the heat of the engine room, close to the magazine room, would have triggered the fire which in turn would have caused the ammunition to explode.

Since the previous 24th May, Italy had entered the war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Brindisi had immediately taken on the appearance of a naval stronghold: freedom of transit had been limited and all the fishermen had their boats confiscated.
