The smallest municipality in Salento is this pretty village with just 1146 inhabitants.

A bit of history:

The territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the archaeological finds discovered in the Madonna della Serra cave and the numerous megalithic monuments scattered throughout the countryside (dolmen, menhir, etc.). The hamlet of Giuggianello (Juianellum) was founded in the 9th century and developed following the destruction of nearby Muro Leccese, which occurred in 924 by the Saracens. The refugees from Muro, fleeing from their city, settled there, causing a significant increase in population. With the arrival of the Normans,

in 1192 the hamlet was incorporated into the County of Lecce governed by Tancredi d'Altavilla;

The crypt of St. John the Baptist, of Byzantine origin, dates back to the 10th-11th century.

It is a rock settlement from 953 AD used as a place of worship by the Basilian monks of the Greek rite,

it became a Christian chapel of the Latin rite where St. John the Baptist was continued to be venerated. Dug entirely into the limestone rock, the hypogeum has a three-nave layout, with a width of eight meters and a height of two, separated by two central pillars obtained during the excavation. Of the original frescoes, only a few faces of saints remain, which are difficult to identify.
