Galugnano, fra Zimbalo e Mesciu Bernardino

      menhir lete galugnano 1

Galugnano is a hamlet of about a thousand inhabitants in the municipality of San Donato di Lecce.

It is believed that the town was founded by the Messapians. Over the centuries it passed under the control of the Greeks, Romans, Barbarians and Byzantines until the feudal period. In 1600 the churches of the Annunziata and the Madonna della Pietà were built.

The church of the Annunziata, which already existed in 1522, was opened for worship in its current form in 1655. The architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, who built numerous churches in the area, including the Cathedral of Lecce, designed the current Baroque structure. The executor of the project was Antonio Fiorentino from Corigliano, as can be seen from the Latin epigraphs inside. It has a façade divided into two orders and is characterized by the decorative exuberance of the Corinthian columns and festoons. The interior, with a single nave, houses three altars, the main one dedicated to the Virgin of the Annunciation and the lateral ones dedicated to the Crucifix and to Saint Dominic. The main altar houses a fresco of the Virgin of Byzantine origin.

In the twentieth century it underwent a major renovation of both the facade and some internal elements. The master builder of these works was Bernardino Miggiano. The figure of this master builder is reconstructed by the author Dario Melissano, grandson of mesciu Bernardino, in a short film in which he imagines the relationship between him as a child and his grandfather as an adult.

      Mesciu Bernardino, mio nonno

The church of the Madonna della Neve is a small medieval building that was expanded several times until the 16th century. Formerly called Santa Maria de li Pisanei, it is composed of three rooms dating back to different eras. The oldest part is in Romanesque style and dates back to the 14th century. Between 1522 and 1540 the Gothic portico was built, then closed towards the end of the 16th century with the construction of the third room in which there is a Renaissance altar.
