Francesco Storella, on logic and magic

      Unknown

Francesco Storella, born around 1529 in Alessano and died in 1575 in Naples, is a significant figure in the philosophical and scientific panorama of the sixteenth century. He began his studies thanks to his father Giovanni, a disciple of Pietro Pomponazzi, and continued in Padua with teachers such as Bernardino Tomitano and Marcantonio de’ Passeri. After obtaining the title of Doctor Artium in 1549, he moved to Naples in 1550, where he established important friendships and began to teach.

Storella is known for his publishing activity, in particular for the republication of Aristotle’s “Secretum Secretorum,” a text that explores themes of politics, medicine, and the natural sciences. His edition, the last printed in Latin, is notable for the presence of a preface and detailed annotations, reflecting his interest in good government and the empirical sciences.

Logic, for Storella, is seen as a practical and speculative science, fundamental to understanding reality. In his work “Libellus quo ad peripateticas aures” of 1557, he argues that the singular can be the object of syllogism, contradicting the ideas of some of his contemporaries. Storella is also interested in natural magic, considered a legitimate discipline, and connects it to astrology and other empirical practices.

His intellectual legacy is remarkable: Storella contributes to a revision of logic and empirical inquiry, laying the foundations for the scientific legitimacy of research into the secrets of nature. His influence extends to figures such as Giovan Battista Della Porta, who continued and expanded his work, bringing Storella’s ideas to a European audience.
