      Zollino Fire Festival

      Every year, for over 40 years, the traditional Fire Festival is repeated in Zollino on December 28th. It is a joyful celebration in the heart of Winter. In fact, the large bonfire would be the reproduction of an artificial sun, which has the archaic aim of warming the cold of the winter season.

      Every year you can taste the many typical foods of the Griko tradition, such as the famous Sceblasti, or puccia in the Zollinese version.

      The drummers and the songs that accompany the splashing of sparks, and the dance steps that mix with the crackling of the fire, make the atmosphere even warmer. The spontaneous rounds and the free jugglers make the event unique and unmissable.

      The original project, fully successful, was to recover the traditional bonfires of St. Anthony, in crisis in the 70s, by bringing them forward from January 17th to December 28th.

      The idea of ​​Giovanni Pellegrino, the creator of the festival, was to bring the traditional Focara di Sant’Antonio closer to a time of year that historically saw the presence of many migrants scattered throughout Italy and the world.

      In recent years, the festival has been enriched with a cathartic element that recreates the symbol of the year that is about to end in a picturesque papier-mâché puppet. The latter is ritually burdened with the drops of sorrow of the Zollinesi, and then burned.

      With fire and music the sorrows of the old year give way to the desires and hopes of the new one.
