The Leuca Lighthouse is approximately 48 metres high and its height is added to that of the elevated territory on which it rests, which is 102 metres above sea level.

The structure, completely white and octagonal in shape, was designed by the engineer Achille Rossi and operated for the first time on September 6, 1866, replacing the old construction that overlooked Punta Meliso, an adaptation of a previous coastal tower. The lighthouse is equipped with a lantern of 3 meters in diameter, made up of 16 lenses, of which 6 are free and 10 are obscured, which project beams of white light visible up to 50 km away, alternating with beams of red light that warn sailors of dangerous shallows.

The interior of the tower is characterised by the presence of a long staircase, composed of 254 steps to be precise, which allows one to climb up to the cage of the projection apparatus.

To visit the Leuca Lighthouse you need to book through the Pro Loco of Leuca. In some periods of the year from the lighthouse you can observe the coasts of Greece and the mountains of Albania and, sometimes, some say even the dives and the water gusts of the mermaid Leucàsia.
