      Who were the Apuli?

      aer

The inhabitants of ancient Apulia, particularly those of Gargano, were known as Dauni and Peucetii. These groups probably belonged to the same ethnic family as the Osci and occupied a smaller area than the vast region of Apulia during the imperial era. The latter, defined in the Augustan division of Italy, extended from Biferno to Cape Leuca and from the Adriatic to the mountains of Samnium in Campania, also including ancient Calabria, known as the Salento Peninsula. Therefore, Apulia of that period was sometimes called “Apulia et Calabria” and also included the area of Benevento, unlike modern Puglia.
