Castrignano del Capo, the medieval village overlooking Leuca

      capo scaled 1 scaled

Castrignano del Capo is a small village in the south of the province of Lecce. The presence of man in the area is attested since the Bronze Age due to the presence of the Mensi menhir located in the small and delightful hamlet of Giuliano di Lecce.

It even seems that Saint Peter himself, on his journey to Rome, stopped in Castrignano del Capo (precisely in Santa Maria di Leuca) and that, since then, the pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva has become the Sanctuary of the Madonna De Finibus Terrae.

Real urban centers began to take shape only around the 10th century, when the Saracens destroyed nearby Vereto, causing its inhabitants to flee and, in turn, gave rise to new agglomerations such as Castrignano del Capo. Enfeoffed to the d’Almeto family in 1280, the town passed over the centuries to numerous feudal families.

The historic center of Castrignano offers interesting tourist attractions, for example the so-called Borgo Terra. This is the ancient medieval nucleus, which has remained almost intact, despite the passing of the centuries. The mother church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, in Baroque style, stands on the ruins of a church destroyed in 1743 by the earthquake that struck the Terra d’Otranto. The interior has a single nave with three side altars on each side, dedicated to San Michele, the Pietà and the Madonna del Rosario. Inside there is a wooden statue from 1707 by Nicola Fumo, depicting San Michele Arcangelo, a work of great artistic value and bearer of a popular legend, according to which the statue does not rest directly on the pedestal but floats a millimeter from the base.

Worth knowing and visiting are the three hamlets of the municipality, namely Salignano, Giuliano and Santa Maria di Leuca.
