Castelluccio Valmaggiore: lakes, waterfalls, mountains and castles

      castelluccio scaled

In the splendid setting of the Dauni Mountains, a few kilometers from the border with Campania, stands the characteristic medieval village of Castelluccio Valmaggiore.

An ideal destination for all lovers of nature itineraries and food and wine traditions.

Castelluccio is a village far from the main tourist circuits, yet rich in history as demonstrated by the presence of ancient churches and remains of important buildings. The name of the village in fact comes from the majestic Byzantine castle, built in the year 1000, and of which only one of the medieval towers remains, 20 meters high. From the top of the towers you could observe the entire area below, which corresponds to the Celone valley.

The characteristic and narrow streets, alleys and squares allow the visitor to immerse themselves in the fairy-tale atmosphere of the village. Windows and portals are often decorated and worked in stone, the most important religious building is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, patron saint of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, celebrated every 24th June. The church is built on the remains of the Byzantine castle.

Another important monument is the church dedicated to San Rocco, co-patron saint of the town.

One of the most important and recently restored residences is the so-called Palazzo del Conte, home of the noble Lanigro family in the 19th century. The main façade is made of stone and is worked with the rustication technique, a technique used especially in the 18th century.

The Celone Visitor Center is a great opportunity to discover the fauna and flora of the areas surrounding the river. The waterfalls of the cold stream will leave you speechless.

Furthermore, it is possible to reach Monte Felice which dominates the valley, covered with woods, chestnut trees and oaks. Dog roses, primroses, buttercups, veronicas and cyclamens will lighten the walker's pace.

The Protected Area Lago Pescara – Monte Cornacchia – Bosco Cerasa is worth a visit, as it offers various services and facilities, such as the Orto dello Zolfo or the Rifugio Difesa, once used to host shepherds, and from which, continuing, you can reach a site of notable geological interest, known by the name of Lame Turchine.
