Carovigno

Carovigno is an important olive oil production center that has its roots in the Messapian period. In the past it was called Karbina, with the Greek meaning of fruitful. Even today it is renowned for the variety and abundance of oil, wine, almonds and figs produced in its fiefdom.

The city was defended by high walls, still visible today. It was a complex system of fortifications, supported by three concentric walls, ringed around the hill.

On the highest point of the center, stood the acropolis, protected by a cyclopean wall of shapeless stones.

The ancient core of the city developed within the walls, characterized by suggestive stone arches and soft houses painted in white lime. At the highest point of the town, the houses and narrow streets frame the Dentice di Frasso Castle.

The Castle was an important military outpost. Its curved tower reveals the Sienese influence of the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, present in Puglia during the years of its construction.

The Castle went from being a military fortress to a sumptuous residence in the 18th century until the last renovations on behalf of Count Dentice in 1904.

Among the most important monuments stands out the Mother Church dedicated to the Assumption, which has its roots in the 14th century, although a 16th century renovation inverted the geometry of the monument.

The Renaissance apse and the rose window are now hidden in the adjacent street. As if to protect a glorious past that is revealed only to the most attentive and sensitive visitors.
