Carosino is located in the western part of the Murge Tarantine just 15 km from Taranto. Its name derives from carus and situs, dear place, or from carus and sinus, dear breast (of the Virgin Mother). An important commercial hub, the village was invaded and destroyed several times: in the 15th century, Skanderberg's Albanian armies razed the ancient farmhouse to the ground, which remained uninhabited for almost half a century, reduced to a few farmhouses and noble lodgings. The centuries-old agricultural vocation is today more than worthily represented by excellent wine production, as well as by the numerous farmhouses that provide a characteristic backdrop to the town.
For over 50 years, between August and September, before the start of the grape harvest, the traditional Wine Festival has been held in Carosino. During the event, it is possible to admire the Primitivo that flows from the monumental fountain in the central square. The Wine Fountain is one of the main historical monuments. In front of the Palazzo Ducale D’Ayala Valva and located in the center of the quadrangular square dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele III, it consists of four pressure taps, pushed back on special ornaments, and an upper jet of water, placed in the center of a water collection basin.
The Primitivo di Manduria Doc that dyes the ancient Fontana di Carosino red seems to have arrived in these lands at the end of the nineteenth century with the dowry of a countess from Altamura who married a lord from Manduria: a Primitivo vine shoot. Thus that marriage sealed a very long love story: that between this vine and these lands that are welcoming like mothers.
