      Carnival of the Grecìa Salentina. The death of Lu Paulinu (Martignano)

      Every year in Martignano, the smallest of the municipalities of Grecìa Salentina, one of the most characteristic and evocative carnivals in Puglia takes place.

      This is a ten-year tradition, involving the schools of Calimera, Caprarica di Lecce and Martignano. Then many associations, such as the Amici te lu Paulinu and the Sartoria Popolare. Making popular participation the nerve center of this delightful carnival.

      The Carnival of Grecia Salentina, and in particular that of Martignano, is an extraordinary event that mixes tradition, culture and a pinch of social satire. The figure of Paulinu Cazzasassi, the straw puppet, becomes the symbol of a celebration in which the people can freely express their opinions. His “death” represents not only the end of the celebrations, but also a reflection on power and society.

      During the celebration, there is an atmosphere of joy and conviviality, with music, songs and a banquet that brings the community together. The tradition of “chiangimorti” adds a touch of humor, paying homage to those who are no longer with us in a grotesque but festive way. The fusion of the sacred and the profane is manifested when, after the party, the “Quaremma” puppet is displayed, marking the beginning of Lent.

      This celebration is not just a moment of fun, but a ritual that has its roots in history, allowing everyone to reflect on the cycle of life and the transitory nature of the holidays.

      The event ends on Shrove Tuesday and, as per tradition, after burning the puppet of “lu Paulino”, people dance and dance until late.
