Borraco, il fiume tropicale di Puglia

The Borraco torrent is a torrent located in Puglia, in the province of Taranto in the municipality of Manduria.

The stream is 0.8 km long and is located on the western Litoranea Salentina road near the Manduria hamlet of San Pietro in Bevagna, next to the Borraco Tower.

The hydronym Borraco could derive from the local language term ora (sinkhole), from which the terms Ura and Uraco, ancient hydronyms with which the torrent was identified. Origin, course and mouth of the torrent

The stream originates from two distinct sources fed by springs located in a fertile pre-coastal plain almost at sea level.

The streams that arise from these springs then flow into a single river about 300 meters from the sea. This river then flows into the Ionian Sea with a very variable mouth, estuary or delta, based on the storm surges that shape the layout of the beach where it flows.

The peculiarity of the double source makes the torrent take the shape of a Y.

The flow of the Borraco torrent is limited, but rather constant and regular. Even in periods of drought, the river maintains a constant flow of water. During periods of intense rain, however, it can swell to the point of overflowing and flooding towards the surrounding countryside.

In summer it is refreshing to dive into its fresh waters while facing the torrid heat of Puglia.
