Barletta, la città della disfida

Barletta originally developed in the shadow of nearby Canusium, of which it was a maritime port, and in the 11th century it became a thriving commercial center, especially during the crusades in the Holy Land. At the beginning of the 16th century the city was the site of the historic clash between the French and the Spanish, held on February 13, 1503 in the territory between Andria and Corato, which takes the name of the Challenge of Barletta.

The municipal territory is part of the Ofanto valley basin and, in addition to being bathed by the river of the same name, which administratively acts as the territorial border between Barletta and Margherita di Savoia, it also hosts its mouth.

The municipality of Barletta, in addition to the hamlets of Fiumara and Montaltino, includes the locality of Canne, an archaeological site remembered for the historic battle won in 216 BC by Hannibal.
