Alba dei Popoli, a Otranto la prima alba d'Italia

Alba dei Popoli has been an event for many years that attracts tourists from all over Italy, eager to greet and inaugurate the new year first. You don’t need to travel the world by plane to tune into the time zones that inaugurate the year first. With a good dose of nationalism, you can stay in Italy, and choose the easternmost point of the boot, Otranto, where the sun rises a few minutes (or seconds) earlier than elsewhere.

Still in the dark, sleepy, cold, but with hearts warm with expectation and soaked with hope, young people, couples, families and children gather at the Punta Palascia lighthouse.

The town of Salento, a cultural bridge between East and West, nestled on the easternmost stretch of coast of the entire peninsula, is the first to welcome the new year.

A night of emotions immersed in art, music and culture.

In fact, the dawn of the people at the lighthouse of Punta Palascia, precedes by a few hours the New Year of the People, which always takes place in Otranto, but close to the historic center, at the Largo di Porta Alfonsina

The celebrations cover a rather long period: a whole month of shows and events that become increasingly crowded in the days preceding the new year.

The review, curated in detail, always offers interesting ideas. The program is richer every year. Extraordinary openings of museums and theaters that host classical and traditional music performances, interviews with institutional representatives of other Mediterranean cultures, shows designed for the little ones, exhibitions of handicrafts created by local artists, film screenings.

To entertain even the most demanding, themed Escape Rooms are planned.

There is no shortage of relaxing spaces where you can immerse yourself in pleasant reading, comfortably lying on large cushions, lulled by good music while sipping a tasty hot herbal tea.
