      The Fig in Puglia

      fico 1

The fig belongs to the Moraceae family and is a xenophilous plant (which preferably lives in arid environments) preferring clayey and sandy soils, it can reach up to 10 meters in height. What are thought to be its fruits are actually infructescences. The syconium, the false fruit, has a color that can range from yellow, to green, to reddish, to blue-violet, to brown and black. Inside the syconium are the unisexual and very small flowers. The fig plant can be a male plant (caprifig) that produces pollen and whose fruits are not edible and a female plant, instead, that produces edible fruits and inside which the seeds are contained. Furthermore, the plants can be unifere (that is, they produce fruits only once a year) or bifere (they produce fruits twice a year). They form the syconia, commonly known as "fioroni", in autumn. They will be ripe in late spring. These are larger than the second fruit, the fig, which emerges in spring and ripens in summer. The fig can be enjoyed fresh or in colorful fruit salads, in desserts or combined with cured meats and cheeses. It can also be dried or prepared in jams and compotes. For the Romans, giving figs as gifts was auspicious, for the Indians the plant is even considered sacred. The most intensive cultivation of the fig occurs in the hottest and most arid climate zones. The fig has laxative, expectorant, emollient and remineralizing properties. Since it is very sugary and caloric, it should be consumed in moderation by those with weight problems.
