      Vieste, the pearl of Gargano

Vieste is a municipality in the province of Foggia. A well-known seaside resort that has been awarded the Blue Flag several times for the quality of its waters, it is part of the Gargano National Park, of which it is the easternmost municipality.

Among the main buildings are the Romanesque Cathedral Basilica and the Castle, both of which were the object of the care of Frederick II of Swabia after the serious damage inflicted on the town by the Venetians.

At the beginning of the “del Castello” beach, south of the town, stands a white limestone monolith about 25 meters high called Pizzomunno, which over the years has become a true symbol of the Gargano town.

Along the coast there are some trabucchi, ancient fishing installations equipped with long wooden arms to support the nets. This is one of the historical elements that distinguish the Gargano area from the rest of the Apulian coast.

Vieste is also a reference port for reaching the Tremiti Islands, located not far north of the coast. The early Christian necropolis La Salata, east of the town, is one of the oldest in the entire Mediterranean basin.

Not far from the necropolis we find the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Merino, located inside the archaeological park of the ancient Roman city of Merinum. Marine erosion has carved numerous caves in the limestone rock along the entire coast, especially in the stretch from Vieste to Mattinata, making the landscape very suggestive. Representative of this phenomenon is the Arch of San Felice, south of Vieste.

Among the best known and most visited caves are the Sfondata cave, the Two Eyes cave, the Smugglers cave, the Round cave, the Bats cave, the Bell cave, the Tomato cave, the Serpent cave, the Viola cave and the Emerald cave.

Behind Vieste, in the hinterland, is the Foresta Umbra, which extends for about 10,000 hectares to the coast, reaching a height of 800 meters above sea level. With over two thousand species of plants and its beech forest, it was declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 2017.
