The strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) is a wild species typical of the Mediterranean vegetation, it belongs to the Ericaceae family, the fruits are called strawberry trees or albatres. It is a fast-growing tree and is also long-lived, it can live for several centuries. The characteristic of this tree is the flowering and fruiting, which we can find together on the same plant. In fact, the strawberry tree begins flowering in autumn and lasts for part of the winter. The fruits then ripen in the following autumn, so it is a tree that gives us on the same plant the white of the flowers, the red of the strawberry trees and the green of the leaves. For this reason it is also called the Italian Tree. Planting a strawberry tree in the garden is a good choice both for its ornamental value and for the fruits and moreover it is a tree that does not need much care. The fruits can be eaten fresh because they are rich in vitamins and polyphenols with antioxidant properties, it can also be used to prepare jams, compotes, and alcoholic drinks.
