Taurisano, the most famous inquisitorial village in Puglia

      Taurisano 2

Taurisano shows off its narrow streets, each characterized by a courtyard or a kiosk. A small jewel that in the tortuosity of its streets composes a diadem, embellished by the buildings of the historic center. Located in the heart of the Serre Salentine, the town probably takes its name from the bull that stands out on the city coat of arms.

In the heart of summer, on August 3, the historic center, with its courtyards, palaces and little churches, dresses up for the celebrations in honor of the patron saint Santo Stefano.

Taurisano è la città natale del filosofo Giulio Cesare Vanini. La casa del grande filosofo salentino, morto per le sue idee sul rogo a Tolosa, si trova in via Roma.

One more reason to get to know the town, which from a maze of narrow streets gave birth to a thinker who made open-mindedness and anti-dogmatism the core of his thought.

The mother church, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Lord, contains a slender and elegant dome, 33 metres high from the bottom, which according to De Giorgi, recalls the church of S. Carlo in Catinari in Rome.

A little further on you can admire the church of Madonna della Strada, one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Puglia. A true jewel of medieval construction and decorative wisdom.

Getting lost in the meanders of the historic center you discover the Palazzo Ducale, built on the ancient foundations of the Angevin castle, dating back to the 13th century, of which the Romanesque arch in Lecce stone and the tower built in the 16th century by the feudal lords Gattinara Lignani remain. The portals embellished with late-Baroque elements, the cross of the Order of the Knights of Malta and the coats of arms of other feudal families of Taurisano date back to later periods. Inside, the vaults frescoed between the 19th and 20th centuries with cherubs, ladies and floral subjects stand out. The building stands in the heart of the town and is now the seat of the municipal offices.

The largest courtyard in the town, dating back to the 16th century, overlooks Via Cesare Battisti, while a Renaissance window opens onto the narrow Viuzzano Isonzo.

The Specchia Silva and the Menhir Sajetti represent the oldest historical testimonies that have survived the passage of time, partly still shrouded in mystery.

Specchia Silva is a large pile of stones and stands 10 meters high. Scholars reveal that, until 800, its height was three times greater and that it was probably used as a lookout point for a very large area. The stones that compose it were used for the production of lime.
