Sant'antonio te le focare (Cutrofiano)

The Salento village is preparing to experience the traditional appointment with the local bonfires spread throughout the country. It is one of the most deeply rooted celebrations in the popular Salento tradition. The tradition of the local bonfires on February 17 in Cutrofiano is an event with a strong emotional impact, very fascinating.

An event that can unite the community in a moment of celebration and memory. Bonfires, or “focare”, represent not only a warming ritual, but also an act of prayer and protection, dating back to historical events far away in time.

The date of February 17, 1810 is linked to a night-time earthquake, during which the people of Cutrofiano quickly abandoned their homes, rushing outside and lighting many bonfires to warm themselves and to pray to Sant'Antoni.

Both at the crossroads, in the countryside and in front of the Church with the statue of the Saint. The procession with the statue of Saint Anthony adds a further layer of spirituality to this celebration, reflecting the devotion of the community.

The bonfires, lit in various parts of the town, create an atmosphere of warmth and sharing, involving both residents and visitors in a collective experience rich in history and tradition.
