      Porto Selvaggio. The first jewelry boutique in Europe

      The Grotta del Cavallo in Porto Selvaggio, in Nardò never ceases to amaze. After the historic discoveries of the past, in 2022 a real treasure was discovered. 600 jewels made with shells in an atelier that belonged to the first Homo Sapiens.

      The study conducted in the cave has allowed to reveal the existence of what could be the oldest boutique of humanity. The treasure is composed of hollow shells that were used to make jewelry.

      The Homo Sapiens workshop discovered by scholars in the Grotta del Cavallo in Nardò is located at the bottom of the Ionian Sea. Archaeologists have found intact shells that cavemen tied together with a hair thread to make necklaces and bracelets. Studies have revealed that the shells were also painted with bright colors.

      On some of them, traces of a red powder that could be ochre were even found. In short, the first real jewelry boutique in Europe.

      Scholars have unearthed over 600 objects related to personal decorum. The discovery has allowed us to have the first aesthetic perception of modern men.

      The many finds show the production of ornamental objects and a tendency towards uniformity. Based on the temporal interval of the layers of interest, it is possible to affirm that this is the first context of production of shell ornaments in the Old Continent.
