      Palagianello, between early medieval churches and ancient culinary recipes

      Palagianello is a charming town whose history dates back to very ancient times, with evidence of human settlements that can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. Over the centuries, this place has experienced various dominations, including the Byzantine, Roman and Norman ones, almost always enjoying considerable administrative autonomy, recognized as a University. However, in 1806, the community lost this autonomy due to the laws that abolished feudal structures, becoming a hamlet of Palagiano.

      Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants of Palagianello expressed the desire to officially separate from Palagiano to regain their autonomy or join the municipality of Mottola. In 1907 Palagianello obtained the status of an autonomous hamlet.

      The main attraction is the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, a beautiful sacred building dating back to the 17th century, located inside a limestone cave dug into the mountain. This church has had significant historical importance: in the 18th century, it was recognized with sovereign sanction by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, becoming the official seat of the brotherhood of the Madonna delle Grazie.

      The rock village of Palagianello is an essential stop. You can admire archaeological finds of great value, including churches dating back to the early medieval period and restored during the Byzantine era.

      The feudal castle of Palagianello, built in the mid-16th century, is located in the highest part of the town. Commissioned by the Domini Roberti family, it served as a strategic point on the surrounding territory.

      La gastronomia di Palagianello riflette la ricchezza della tradizione culinaria pugliese. Tra i piatti più celebri della zona figura la pasta con i peperoni dolci, una preparazione deliziosa che combina pasta fresca, pomodoro, basilico e peperoni.

      Inoltre, Palagianello, così come l’intera area tarantina, è rinomato per i suoi prodotti locali di alta qualità, tra cui l’agnello con i piselli e il coniglio al forno. Non mancano specialità come le fave fritte, gli sgombri all’aceto, la terrina di pescatrice e il semifreddo agli amaretti. Un tour enogastronomico nella zona rappresenterebbe un ottimo modo per scoprire e assaporare queste leccornie culinarie.

      An event of great importance for the community is the patronal festival of Palagianello, which is celebrated annually in honor of the patron saint of the city, the Madonna delle Grazie.
