Luca Giordano, the Baroque painter who signed his canvases

Luca Giordano Madonna della Purita olio su rame dopo il restauro Sacrestia Tesoro di San Gennaro ph Simone Florena

Luca Giordano, born in Naples in 1634, was an influential painter of the Italian Baroque, known for his technical skill and stylistic versatility. Son of a modest painter of Apulian origin, he studied in Naples with J. Ribera. He began his training under the guidance of his father and later at the workshop of Jusepe de Ribera.

Giordano is recognized for his works characterized by a lively expressiveness and a bold use of color, which helped to redefine the Neapolitan artistic landscape of the 17th century. His early works, influenced by the Caravaggesque style, show a growing search for originality and innovation. Over time, his art oriented itself towards more baroque forms, integrating elements of decoration and drama.

Among the works signed by Giordano, the painting of Maria Ss. della Purità in Gallipoli is particularly significant. Here, the artist used a distinctive monogram, composed of the intertwined letters “L. G.” and followed by the letter “F,” which stands for “Luca Giordano made.” This type of signature is a sign of his attention to recognition of his work, an important aspect for an artist of his caliber.

In addition, in the Cathedral, there is another painting by Giordano, displayed on the altar of Sant’Isidoro Agricola, which also features his signature with the initials “LGF”. In this work, Giordano included a self-portrait, representing himself in the figure of a knight witnessing the miracle of the Saint, a gesture that testifies to his commitment not only as a painter, but also as a visual narrator of the faith and spirituality of his time.

Among his most important commissions are frescoes and canvases for churches and palaces, both in Naples and in other cities, including significant works for the monastery of El Escorial in Spain. His artistic production is vast and varied, ranging from religious themes to portraits and allegories.

Giordano died in 1705 in Naples, leaving a lasting legacy that influenced subsequent generations of artists. His ability to adapt and innovate within the artistic trends of his time made him a central figure in the Italian Baroque.
