The Cave of Poetry (La Poesia)

TEMPLATE FIRMA FOTO 2 copia 4

To admire a dream place described by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful sites in the world, you have to reach Melendugno, and in particular Roca Vecchia, a coastal town located between San Foca and Torre dell’Orso.

Along a coastline steeped in history and ancient archaeological evidence, lies what has been included in the ranking of the 10 most beautiful natural pools in the world.

This is the Grotta della Poesia, and it is part of a karst complex that includes another enchanting natural pool of smaller dimensions.

These cavities were caves with a rock covering. Over time, the sea and karst and atmospheric phenomena have caused the ceiling to collapse, transforming them into suggestive natural pools with turquoise waters, capable of enchanting anyone lucky enough to admire them.

The Grotta della Poesia is elliptical in shape and is located about thirty meters from the sea. It is connected to the sea by a channel that is often traveled by swimming or by boat or kayak.

The Greek name “posìa”, indicated places where it was possible to find fresh water to drink (with a probable reference to the presence of a now extinct fresh water source), the reference to poetry has become the subject of suggestive legends linked to the caves, also inspired by the beauty of the site. It is said, in fact, that the clear waters of the natural pool were particularly appreciated by a splendid princess who used to immerse herself in it, arousing the admiration of the men who looked at her. Among them were poets and singers who, enchanted by such beauty, came to compose magnificent verses for the girl who swam.

In fact, very ancient Messapian (but also Greek and Latin) inscriptions have been found on the walls of the caves, which would confirm their consecration to the god Taotor. Not far from the caves, moreover, you can admire the remains of a system of surrounding walls dating back to the same period, the remains of a sixteenth-century watchtower and a manor overlooking the sea and the sanctuary of the Madonna di Roca, dating back to the seventeenth century.
