The pomegranate (Punica Granatum) is part of the Punicaceae family. It is a tree that grows in mild climates. It is very ornamental when in spring it covers itself with bright green leaves and vermilion flowers that soon turn into fruits. These ripen in autumn.
At this point the fruit must be harvested when already ripe because if it is harvested early, once detached from the tree, the fruit will no longer ripen.
The pomegranate is composed of about six hundred seeds inside, called arils. Probably for this peculiarity it is considered a symbol of fertility, wealth and power.
The fruit can be consumed fresh or in the form of juice. It is considered a real panacea for health, thanks to the flavonoids, mineral salts and vitamins of which it is very rich.
Therefore it protects against cardiovascular diseases, is gastro-protective, anti-inflammatory and strengthens the immune system. The cultivation of this tree in Puglia has increased tenfold in eight years and continues to grow, favored by the abandonment of the cultivation of the olive tree decimated by Xylella.
