      The Ash Tree in Puglia

      Fraxinus americana

The ash tree (Fraxinus) is a genus of spermatophyte plants, belonging to the Oleaceae family, and includes more than 60 species of trees or shrubs with leaves. It is a fast-growing tree with an elegant appearance that provides plenty of shade in the summer with its green foliage, which turns yellow or red (depending on the type of ash) in autumn and provides plenty of light in the winter, when it is bare. It grows in all types of soil, but fears drought. It does not need pruning because its beauty lies precisely in its natural growth. The infamous manna is obtained from the common ash tree, the protagonist of many biblical scenes.

In Puglia, the ash tree can be observed in the beautiful Valle dei Frassini, inside the Parco dei Paduli, near Supersano. Climbing the Serra di Supersano, we find ourselves in a place that immediately recalls the biblical fruit, namely the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Coelimanna. At the time of the construction of the crypt, around the 10th century, in Puglia there were entire forests of ash trees, which, with the movement of the wind, created a sort of snowfall of manna, with the flavor of a true celestial blessing.
