Corigliano d’Otranto, the heart of Salento

      corigliano Castello

Corigliano d’Otranto is a town of just under 6 thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce. The name, according to some scholars, derives from Cuore, a symbol that is found in the city coat of arms. Others, more likely, trace it back to the Greek word Chora, with the meaning of village, community. In fact, in Corigliano an ancient language is still spoken, Griko, a living testimony of the centuries-old relations with Greece and the Greek people.

The territory was inhabited by prehistoric civilizations and maintains a Roman layout that can be traced in a housing rectangle located in the historic center. During the early Middle Ages, in the 9th century, a Basilian monastery was formed that soon became an important center of Byzantine culture and translation of ancient codes.

The vital and cultural center of Corigliano is the Castello De Monti. It is one of the most beautiful castles in Puglia.

The mother church is dedicated to San Nicola di Mira, and was built in the mid-1500s. The entrance portal is surmounted by a lunette with the statues of the Redeemer, the Virgin and San Nicola. The bell tower is even older, it served as a lookout tower and was part of the medieval walls (a section of the walls is still visible in Via Don Bosco).

At the end of the 19th century, the floor mosaic was created with important biblical scenes that unfold through a beautiful and Kabbalistic tree of life.

In Piazza San Nicola, in the heart of the historic center, there is a fountain that celebrates the Apulian Aqueduct. Created by a famous Apulian sculptor, and inaugurated in the 30s of the last century in conjunction with the construction of the large basin of the Aqueduct. The fountain is called “Inno alle Acque”.

The other monuments of Corigliano are one of the entrance gates, called Caporta, from the Greek cau+porta, meaning south gate. The Lucchetti arch, steeped in sacred and alchemical symbols.

Finally, we recommend Palazzo Comi, with a beautiful adjacent baroque balcony that is an absolute must-see. Palazzo Coia, with an epigraph that reads “CONTRA RAGGION INVIDIA NON HA LOCO” (CONTRA RAGGION ENVY HAS NO PLACE)
