      Church of Santa Barbara (Montesardo)

santa barbara montesardo scaled 1 scaled

Not far from the center of Montesardo, among dry stone walls and wisteria trees, stands the Byzantine church dedicated to Santa Barbara. It is an old female monastery, whose construction dates back to the 13th century.

The monastery is mentioned in the 1325 edition of the “Collectora Terrae Idronti”.

It is not certain when the monastery was abandoned, but in 1590, Bishop Ercole Lamia no longer refers to any monastery in the report of the pastoral visit to the parish of Montesardo.

However, the church was frequented by the faithful until the 18th century, until it became, over time, due to abandonment and subsequent changes of ownership, a structure used for agricultural purposes.

The cycle of frescoes inside the single nave of the church of Santa Barbara dates back to the period of construction of the church, the 14th century.

In addition to the Saint of the same name, with her iconographic symbol, there is a fourteenth-century depiction of the Supplication, called Deesis.

To visit the church you need to take advantage of the extraordinary openings of the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) or call the municipality of Montesardo to organize an extraordinary opening with the administrators.
