Castro contains two souls. The town of medieval origin, Castro di sopra, located on a promontory 98 meters above sea level and enclosed by a wall that embraces the Aragonese Castle, built on the remains of the Byzantine fortress.

The ancient village dates back to the Roman city of Castrum Minervae. While in the Middle Ages it became one of the first cities in Salento elevated to the rank of county, as well as a bishopric until 1818, as evidenced by the wonderful Cathedral of the Annunziata, in Romanesque style.

Castro Marina is an important fishing and seaside resort. Its coastline is characteristic, along which there are priceless karst caves, such as the fabulous Grotta della Zinzulusa, Grotta Romanelli and Grotta Palombara. It is impossible to visit this rocky stretch of coast, full of inlets and ravines, without being enchanted by the shades that the sea takes on during the day and near the caves, in a play of light and reflections that literally takes your breath away.

Since 2006, part of the Castro area has been included in the Otranto Coast – Santa Maria di Leuca and Tricase Woods Park established by the Puglia region.
