Carlo Rosa, the Bitonto painter famous for the “roof” of Bari

San Gaetano Carlo Rosa 001 e1740468539978

Carlo Rosa, originally from the city of Bitonto, was born on July 7, 1613. He began his painting career in Naples, making himself noticed with the work “Christ who does miracles”. This painting, along with other creations, positions him as an already mature and independent artist at the age of twenty-eight. His activity continues between Naples and Puglia. His works are characterized by a lively narrative and a bold use of color, which enrich and make his compositions dynamic.

Over the years, Carlo Rosa became known above all for his decorative works, among which the ceiling of the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari stands out, considered one of his most monumental and significant masterpieces.

His artistic production, characterized by a fusion of styles and influences, remains a fundamental chapter in the history of Southern art, highlighting not only Rosa's individual genius, but also the cultural and artistic context of his time.
