Cagnano varano, borgo di pescatori e arcangeli

Cagnano Varano is a town of just over 6,000 inhabitants. It overlooks Lake Varano, and its city symbol is a shield with an arm holding a bishop's staff inside. This is San Cataldo, the town's patron saint.

The town is famous for its long fishing tradition on Lake Varano, a real journey back in time, among fishermen who appear as the disciples who fished on Lake Tiberias. And then, for the cave of San Michele Arcangelo, it is a cave of karst origin that boasts frequentations dating back to the Paleolithic.

In this cave, according to legend, appeared Saint Michael the Archangel to whom the main altar located at the back of the cave is dedicated. It is for this reason that the consecration of the cave is linked to the period of the cult of Michael in Gargano, but the iconography of many frescoes would demonstrate its consecration already in the early Christian era.

The special containers that collect the water dripping from the ceiling and the minor altars are dedicated to various saints including Saint Lucy, Saint Raphael and the Santissima Annunziata

According to tradition, it was visited by both Saint Francis and Saint Pio.
