Basantello, the river between the hills

      basantello scaled 1 scaled

The Basentello torrent is an Italian river whose source is located at 397 m above sea level in Piano di Palazzo near Palazzo San Gervasio. The river marks the border between the province of Potenza and the metropolitan city of Bari.

The river flows through the territory of Gravina in Puglia and receives the Roviniero torrent from the left.

The river continues to Lake Serra del Corvo and continues south-east, near the border with the province of Matera, to then flow from the left into the Bradano river near Lake San Giuliano.

In 1974 the waters of the Basentello torrent were dammed by the Serra di Corvo dam to create an artificial basin with a capacity of 41 million cubic metres.

In the stream there are the native fish Alburnus albidus or southern bleak and Squalius squalus or chub; the species of uncertain origin Rutilus rubilio or rovella and the alien species Carassius carassius or crucian carp and Carassius auratus or red fish.
