      Canale dei Fani

      elefanti

The watercourse of the Canale dei Fani, although fed by underground water through a series of outcrops and small springs in the upper reaches, becomes perennial only starting from the spring located under “La Chiusa”.

The strongest flow, in fact, comes from a small cave.

At that point the flow rate is estimated to be around 100 litres per minute.

The valley of the “Canale dei Fani” which is believed to have been created around 10 million years ago following a lowering of the Cretaceous platform, has been characterised over time by a complex phenomenon of erosion of the limestone rock due to the action of the watercourse.

A singular phenomenon, much more recent, has transformed some olive trees into real sculptures. To many, the shapes evoke elephants, which is why the Fani canal has been renamed, the valley of the Elephants.
